The new 100% electric Volkswagen ID.4 SUV is engaged in a rally in Mexico, to promote its performance in an extreme environment.
A special version of the new Volkswagen ID.4 is engaged this week at National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) Mexican 1000, a rally which takes place from April 25 to 29, 2021 in the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. Recently voted World Car of the Year 2021, the 100% electric SUV now wants to promote its performance in an extreme environment.
This somewhat special copy of theID.4 1st Edition has been modified by Rhys Millen Racing, with an interior designed for racing featuring a roll bar and bucket seats, additional screens to monitor the condition and temperature of the battery, underbody protections, 18-inch OZ Racing rims with all-terrain tires, not to mention a full suspension revised and raised by about 5 cm for the off road.
The ID.4, however, retains its rear-wheel drive and 201 horsepower electric motor as standard, as well as its 82 kWh battery. To recharge it, a portable biofuel fuel generator, with a power of 50 kW, is on board, which should allow it to complete up to 98% of the route without needing to be plugged in.
Volkswagen has a long history with the NORRA Mexican 1000: as early as 1967, a Beetle driven by Meyers Manx won the first edition of the rally, which has come a long way since. This year, the race route will span 1.836 km, of which 1,437 were taken off-piste.
