The Japanese manufacturer Honda has announced that by 2040, its models will become 100% electric or hydrogen fuel cell, in the majority of markets.
After Renault, Bentley, Jaguar, Ford or even Volvo, the list of manufacturers who will become 100% electric is growing, and Honda is the youngest to come and expand. Indeed, brands are subject to increasingly stringent anti-pollution standards, with heavy fines, and are therefore forced to definitively draw a line on their heat engines.
In its roadmap for the electrification of its models, the Japanese manufacturer forecasts that 40% of its sales in the world’s largest markets will consist of electric or fuel cell vehicles by 2030, and will reach 80% of ‘by 2035. Honda also aims to become completely carbon neutral by 2050, with an important recycling strategy and the use of components made from sustainable materials.
If the Honda has already started this process, to achieve the goal of 100% electric or hydrogen fuel cell models by 2040, Honda will rely on a whole new platform homemade, baptized e:Architecture and dedicated to electric vehicles. Models using this platform will first be launched in the United States, before being released worldwide.
In North America, Honda has partnered with General Motors to develop two large electric vehicles, which will use the same “Ultium” battery technology as the new GMC Hummer EV, and which will be launched in 2024. In Japan, it will be a small 100% electric “kei car” which is scheduled for 2024: for this, Honda will use raw materials and batteries from Japan, to support the local economy of its country of origin.
