Surprise on the side of BMW. The German manufacturer has just announced the arrival of a unique hydrogen fuel model : the i Hydrogen Next, fuel cell version of the X5.
This hydrogen technology is currently under development at BMW’s new Lightweight Construction and Technology Center (LuTZ) located in Landshut, Germany.
“However, the conditions necessary to allow the BMW group to offer a hydrogen vehicle to customers have not yet been met”, announces the Bavarian brand. “Further commitment is needed, in particular with regard to the hydrogen charging infrastructure. », Continues BMW.
In the meantime, the firm announces that its i Hydrogen Next benefits from the same electric motorization as the iX3 for a total power brought here to nearly 380 hp, against 286 hp for the zero emission X3. It also embeds two tanks capable of holding together up to six kilograms of hydrogen, which would guarantee “great autonomy in all weathers”, says BMW.
Before arriving in a final production version, the i Hydrogen Next will first be integrated into a pilot fleet that will be launched from 2022.
