The Italian style center of the Stellantis Group pays homage to the Abarth 1000 Sport Prototipo from the 1960s, with a modern reinterpretation in a unique edition.
After the Abarth 500 and 124, the scorpion firm is replaying the neo-retro with this news Abarth 1000 SP, which pays homage to the eponymous 1966 model, designed in collaboration with Alfa Romeo. A model that has distinguished itself in many international competitions, including the 500 km of the Nürburgring in September 1966.
This project to recreate a small, light and efficient sportswoman was already topical in 2009 at Abarth, before being put aside … Indeed, at the time at FCA, it was the Alfa Romeo 4C which had made the concept a reality.
Today, it is also the small two-seater roadster in Biscione which served as the basis for this new Abarth 1000 SP, which incorporates all the values of the model of the 60s: lightness, design and aerodynamics. We find the main elements of its style, with small round lights, characteristic air intakes on the hood, curved fenders and an imposing roll bar at the rear.
Contrary to Sport Prototype of yesteryear which was equipped with a tubular chassis, the 2021 version is based on an architecture combining carbon fiber and aluminum. Under the hood hides a turbocharged four-cylinder 1.742 cm3, developing the trifle of 240 horsepower.
Unfortunately, this new Abarth 1000 SP is a unique model, and should not cross the threshold of series production. The Turin firm, however, plans to engage it in events dedicated to vintage cars, starting this fall.
