BMW is preparing a strong offensive in the electric field, notably with a future zero-emission M5, the iM5, which could develop more than 1,000 hp!
The current BMW M5 will most likely be the last generation not to use electricity to boost its performance (and lower CO2 emissions). Unsurprisingly, we are therefore expecting a plug-in hybrid engine (like a Peugeot 508 PSE) for the next generation, which should land in 2024.
But according to our German colleagues at Auto Bild, BMW is already working on a 100% electric version of its sporty sedan, with arguments to be placed directly against the Tesla Model S, Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan: it will be called the BMW iM5.
The German publication has already intercepted electric prototypes camouflaged in the current BMW M5, with an estimated power of around 700 hp. But BMW should not stop there: the Bavarian manufacturer has developed a platform to accommodate up to 3 motors of 250 kW each, two at the rear and one at the front, for a combined power of 750 kW, or 1,020 hp! Enormous power that should propel the heavy sedan from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 3 seconds. All with a range that should be around 700 km thanks to very large batteries under the floor.
For its part, the hybrid version should be based on the set developed for the future X8M, with 750 hp. With a solution similar to that recently announced by competitor AMG, BMW should continue to use its 4-liter turbo V8, coupled to an electric motor. The race for power is not over yet!
