Opel unveils a new version of its Vivaro-e electric utility van, which runs on hydrogen using a rechargeable fuel cell.
The Stellantis group recently unveiled its new commercial vehicles with a hydrogen fuel cell. Here are more details on the new Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen, which is based on the 100% electric Vivaro-e van in its version with two sliding side doors, in 4.95 and 5.30 meter formats: instead of its battery, we find three carbon fiber tanks, allowing to store hydrogen under high pressure at 700 bars. The cargo space is not impacted by this change, and remains identical to the thermal and electric versions, with a volume of 5.3 to 6.1 m3.
Unlike the 100% electric version, which is more restrictive when recharging, the full of hydrogen of the Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen is carried out only three minutes, and offers a range of more than 400 kilometers.
The 45 kW fuel cell offers enough power to drive on the highway, and it’s all backed up by a 10.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, allowing you to recover energy when braking, and to keep going. up to 50 kilometers in 100% electric mode. This is, like the battery-powered Vivaro-e, rechargeable via a socket or a charging station.
To produce the Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen as well as the future hydrogen versions of the Peugeot Expert and Citroën Jumpy, Stellantis has set up its “Global Competence Center for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells” in Germany, at Opel Special Vehicles (OSV) in Rüsselsheim.
The first deliveries of the Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen will be made tofall 2021 for fleet customers. Opel is thus continuing its approach which aims to offer an electrified version of each of its models, both private and commercial, by 2024.
