their price could double in the future

Very popular in our regions, city cars could soon become a rare commodity, because of the new, increasingly stringent anti-pollution standards.

If the success of SUVs is not running out of steam, with good sales, city cars are also very popular, for their affordable price and their compactness. Indeed, the Peugeot 208 and Renault Clio are regularly at the top of sales in France. But this trend could well become history, because the price of city cars equipped with a thermal engine is likely toincrease sharply in the years to come.

Euro 7 standard planned for 2025

According to Luca de Meo, the new boss of Renault, the price of thermal city cars would even double, because of the future Euro 7 standards, the entry into force of which is expected for 2025. To comply with them, manufacturers will be forced to implement new pollution control systems that are much more sophisticated, and whose cost is not negligible.

While this additional cost will not have a considerable impact on the most upscale cars, the smaller models like the city cars in the A and B segments will clearly suffer. Still according to Luca de Meo, the solution to this problem would beelectrification in forced march of city dwellers, in order to overcome these regulatory constraints.

An assertion that seems to go in the direction of technological progress in terms of batteries, which will ultimately lead to the fall in the cost of electric cars. Indeed, according to a recent study, electric cars could become cheaper than thermals by 2027.
