Cupra today lifts the veil on its first 100% electric car, cousin of the Volkswagen ID.3: the Cupra Born. Tour of the owner of this trendy electric sports car!
We already had a taste of it a little while ago… Today, the time has come. The Cupra Born is revealed in broad daylight! Let’s go into the details of this Spanish sports car, cousin of the Volkswagen ID.3, and the first 100% electric car from the Martorell firm.
If the German and the Spanish are cousins, it starts with what we find under the hood. Indeed, la Cupra Born is designed via the German group’s MEB platform, a platform dedicated to 100% electric vehicles.
Thus, the Cupra Born offers three versions concerning the capacity of its battery: 45, 58 and 77 kWh. The electrified Cupra benefits from an electric motor placed at the rear axle, offering three power levels: 150 hp (110 kW), 204 hp (150 kW) and even 231 hp (170 kW) if you opt for the e-Boost pack.
For the boosted version of more than 300 hp, it will be necessary to wait a little longer. It is only next year, in 2022, that the attractive concept – based on the ID.4 GTX and its 82 kWh battery – should become reality.
Autonomy is not left out since Cupra announces up to 500 km on a single charge thanks to the efficiency of its 77 kWh battery. On the wiser versions, the maximum distance promised by the manufacturer goes to 420 km with the 58 kWh battery and goes down to 340 km with the smallest battery.
To establish its sporty side, the Cupra Born benefits from a neat interior. Bucket seats, head-up display, new multifunction steering wheel with driving mode and Cupra mode selection buttons… Not to mention Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), progressive steering, ESC Sport mode for stability control or even the steering system. braking. No doubt, Cupra DNA is present in this Born.
From the outside, the Cupra Born advocates its racy side with taut lines that point forward. If you remember the El Born concept presented in 2018 in Geneva, then you will notice that this production version is almost identical. Good news in order to boost the sporty compact segment a little bit, even more in electric. Segment almost nonexistent nowadays.
We quickly notice its large wheels which can be mounted at most in 20 inches. The Spanish also asserts itself compared to its German cousin with a slightly larger size and its 6 cm more between the shields – for a total length of 4.32 m – and a lower ground clearance of 2 cm , to culminate at 1.54 m high.
Finally, the grille and its Full LED optics corroborate the aggressive appearance of the car.
Although full price details will be communicated at a later date, it would be wise for Cupra to offer its Born at a lower price than the entry ticket of the Tesla Model 3, a direct competitor of the Iberian. As a reminder, the American trades from € 43,800.
It is estimated that the Spanish sports compact should start around € 35,000, excluding ecological bonus. Knowing that the Volkswagen ID.3 now starts at € 33,890. It remains to be seen whether the health situation does not risk causing a hiccup in the marketing of this Cupra Born. The Iberian is indeed supposed to enter production from September in Zwickau, Germany, alongside the ID.3 … To join the dealerships in October 2021.
