The road versions of these 3 cars that have marked the history of motorsport, and more particularly the 24 hours of Le Mans, are found on the Millbrook circuit in England for a summit meeting!
A few days ago, we were already telling you about this incredible gathering! Luckily, it has 3 parts, each dedicated to a particular car. After telling you about the McLaren F1, today let’s take a look at the one that won the category in 1996: The Porsche 911 GT1. An equally legendary vehicle, but perhaps a little less well-known.
The recipe for creating this GT1 was ultimately quite simple: take the front end of a 993 generation Porsche 911 and stick the back of a 962 already victorious at Le Mans. What makes it, the first 911 with an engine located in the rear central position!
Eh yes ! Under this body, there is indeed a 993 and not 996 as these boomerang-shaped lights might imply. Why ? Because in 1997, the year in which the majority of these road GT1s were built, the new generation of 911 came out, the 996. And what could be better than an ultra rare supercar to promote a brand new product?
To respect the category regulations, 25 units had to be built for the road. A figure largely reached by the McLaren, but it seems that Porsche was able to produce only 20 units of its GT1. A very, very rare car! Its performances are up to this exclusivity. Weighing only 1150 kg, the turbo flat 6 developing 540 hp and which sends its power to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox allows it to reach 100 km / h in just 3.7 s!
You guessed it, there is still a third video covering this infernal trio and more particularly the supercar with the star. We will therefore meet once again around these legends to talk about the third and last car: the Mercedes CLK GTR!
