Are motorhomes made for the highway? With higher fares and additional constraints, we’re not sure whether expressways are the right choice for our fellow travelers!
With the beautiful days coming back, and the holidays approaching, the wish to go in a motorhome becomes more and more interesting for a lot of people.
But a lot of RVers will tell you, these big vehicles are not very suitable for the highway… The main reason concerns the price, which remains much higher for vehicles that are more than 2 meters high. Likewise, the philosophy of the motorhome is rather to enjoy the road and improvise rather than make long sections of the motorway!
One of the first good reasons to venture onto the highway with your motorhome concerns fuel consumption. This usually varies between vehicles, but between making long straight lines at a constant speed instead of small portions of roads surrounded by roundabouts, stops and bends, consumption is seen to increase sharply in the latter case.
The motorway journey can also be more interesting if you want to get to their destination quickly
, if the latter is located at a distance sufficiently far from its starting point for example. In this case, it is advantageous to take the expressways so as not to waste time and then to leave the motorway when approaching the desired destination. In some countries, highways are sometimes free also, which can represent an interesting solution if you want to drive fast without being taxed. In the countries concerned, we find Germany for example or some highways in Spain!
When you drive a motorhome on the motorway, you belong to a different category of vehicle: you are generally classified in category 2.
Motorhomes are generally over 3.5 tonnes and over 3 meters high, which puts them directly in this category, unlike cars which are categorized as Class 1.
Generally, the prices are in the order of 30 to 40% more expensive depending on the portions taken, which can make a big difference over long distances!
