The German manufacturer presents the Audi Charging Hub: a new concept of a rapid charging station, which will be tested at the end of summer 2021.
With the democratization of the use of electric cars, necessarily arises the problem of charging infrastructure, to be able to travel without fear of an empty battery failure. The manufacturer with the four rings is aware of this, and with its range of 100% electric vehicles which is expanding, in particular with the arrival of the Audi Q4 e-tron, it had to offer a quick and easy charging solution to its customers.
Audi therefore imagined the Charging Hub, a premium concept of a high-power charging station, which consists of several modular cube-shaped containers, containing reused lithium-ion batteries intended to store up to 2.45 MWh of energy : thus, customers’ cars can be recharged without the need to use high-voltage lines and expensive transformers, while the Hub’s batteries will be recharged at night or through photovoltaic panels located on its roof.
This modular Hub can be transported and installed quickly on each site, without any constraints on the capacity of the local network. Each station will offer up to six charging stations, with a charging power of up to 300 kW, all thanks to a standard high voltage connection of 400 volts.
Audi has already announced that these stations will allow an Audi e-tron GT quattro to be recharged with a power of 270 kW, to regain 80% of autonomy in approximately 23 minutes. A high-end lounge, located upstairs, will allow customers to wait while their vehicle is being charged. Charging stations can be reserved in advance, while those remaining free can also be used by customers of models from other brands.
The first “Charging Hub” offered by Audi will be put into service by the end of summer 2021 in Germany, for a full-scale test as a first step. Depending on the results of this test, and if the success is with go, Audi will study the deployment in series of this concept of rapid charging station, on a larger scale.
