Campervans and converted vans: the stars of deconfinement

The coronavirus has profoundly changed the habits and desires of the French to escape. The “van life” will be particularly popular on the vacation route this year.

After more than a year under the constraint of the coronavirus crisis, the French need an escape more than ever. According to a recent YouGov study for Ford, 74% of French people have new travel ideas, impacted by health measures and bans on traveling abroad.

They are also 64% to want to use the car, a motorhome or a van / campervan for their next vacation, because of their greater convenience (72%) and their safer health aspect (27%). These recreational vehicles tend to lose their “old-fashioned” image and furthermore see their clientele rejuvenate, young people see it as a cheaper way to go on vacation, while older people favor them for their greater safety.

Motorhomes and vans: an increasingly rich offer

From last year, sales of converted vans / vans grew by 20% in France, compared to 2019: a trend which is confirmed even more in this year 2021. In Europe, no less than 234,000 units of converted vans / vans were sold in 2020, an increase of 12%: a historical record. Motorhome sales are up 21%, with 160,000 units sold.

The blue oval manufacturer has anticipated this trend, and offers in stock at its dealerships more than 300 units of its Ford Transit Custom Nugget, a campervan designed in collaboration with Westfalia. Thus, customers who would like a new vehicle will not have to endure waiting times between order and delivery, which can sometimes reach a year. Consequently, with an increasingly vast offer and a strong increase in demand, the second-hand market has exploded, and rental has emerged as the alternative of choice.
