Peugeot unveils the station wagon version of its sedan, the new 308 SW. We take a look at what is changing!
One could fear its disappearance, so much the SUVs nibble market share of the station wagons. It is not: the Peugeot 308 SW is back! Based on third generation of the sedan compact from the Lion, it adopts its sharp style and its vocation to shake up German references. But Peugeot did not take it easy, and totally transformed the back. We take a look at what is changing.
From the end of the hood to the rear doors, nothing has changed compared to the Peugeot 308 sedan. But behind, nothing to see! Rather than simply grafting a trunk to its sedan, Peugeot has decided to lengthen the wheelbase (+55 mm), to provide better habitability in the rear seats. The rear overhang (distance behind the rear wheels) has been lengthened by 21 cm. Result: the SW version is longer by almost 30 cm compared to the sedan, with a total of 4.64 m. It is also 6 cm longer than the current 308 SW.
And all this benefits a very dynamic style. As on the Peugeot 508 SW, the roof line is very sloping, and guides the eye towards a sloping rear window and two spoilers. On the other hand, the station wagon version loses the black band which joins the rear lights of the 308 sedan, Peugeot having decided to focus on the trunk volume. The latter obviously benefits from the increasing proportions. It now stands at 608 liters according to the manufacturer, and up to 1,634 liters with the bench folded down.
Another novelty at the rear: the bench can now be split into 3 parts (40/20/40), compared to two parts previously. Finally, the trunk can be fitted with motorized jacks for automatic opening.
For the rest, this 308 SW incorporates all the characteristics of the new Peugeot 308.
Engine level first: a diesel (BlueHdi 130 hp), two gasoline (PureTech 110 and 130 hp), and two plug-in hybrids (Hybrid 180 and 225 hp). Embedded technologies are also at the same level, with autonomous driving level 2 optional (lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, lane change assistant, etc.), or the new ” i-toggles“, This second touch screen which provides quick access to the main functions.
The new 308 SW has just been unveiled, Peugeot has not yet communicated the prices of this new compact station wagon. But the sedan version being available from 24,800 €, we can expect prices around € 26,000. This is also the entry price for the current generation.
