800,000 cars could be missing at VW

The auto industry continues to run out of chips, so many vehicles cannot be built. At Volkswagen, the consequences for 2021 could be significant.

The shortage of electronic chips could increase the pressure on the auto industry. But there is uncertainty as to its exact magnitude.

The semiconductor shortage situation continues to be “extremely volatile,” Volkswagen said. It is not possible to reliably predict the extent of the supply crisis by the end of the year. Recently, it is Jean-Marc Chéry, the boss of STMicroelectronics who said that the shortage would last until 2022.

800,000 vehicles missing for 2021?

During the first quarter, the manufacturer Volkswagen had already not been able to produce the 100,000 vehicles planned. According to a report from the economic portal “ Business Insider“, Internal estimates are currently circulating estimating that 800,000 units would not be produced in 2021.

The manufacturer did not want to officially comment on this “speculative” figure. This is because forecasts of the delivery situation can change daily, one way or the other.

« We expect the situation to ease in the second half of the year. The Volkswagen Group will do everything possible to compensate for vehicles not built due to the shortage of chips later this year. »Said group purchasing manager Murat Aksel.

Global consequences

Due to the lack of parts, many car factories had to introduce short-time working. In France, many manufacturers such as PSA (Star) or Renault were affected by the shortage and had to stop the production of certain vehicles for several weeks, as with the Peugeot 308 for example.

In Germany, besides Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW, among others, have been affected for example. Recently it is the Bosch group which announced the opening of a semiconductor plant in Germany, in an attempt to bring some oxygen to the automotive industry still in crisis.

The plant, which is expected to employ nearly 700 employees, has scheduled its first deliveries by next September.

According to Munich-based consulting firm Alix Partners, around 3.9 million vehicles less could be produced in the world this year.
