Mazda will soon electrify its entire lineup, including the sporty MX-5.
To survive increasingly stringent anti-pollution constraints, the Mazda MX-5 is going to have to change. The automaker recently announced that its entire range would be electrified by 2030, and that of course includes the friendly roadster.
On the other hand, Mazda did not specify what form this electrification will take for the next generation of its sports car. The roadster could for example become 100% electric, and thus compete with a future small electric sports car which would be in development at Honda. But it is more likely that the Japanese manufacturer is less radical, and opts instead for a form of hybridization. The simplest solution would be to adapt the 48V mild hybrid system, available in particular on the current Mazda 3.
This system could slightly reduce emissions and preserve the featherweight of the MX-5, which is the delight of its fans. And that, Mazda understood it well: “we will work hard so that the next MX-5 is light and inexpensive, in the spirit of the sporty two-seater convertible that customers expect, ”said a representative of the brand who spoke on the American site The Drive.
