Building an electric car pollutes more than a thermal one. How many kilometers do you have to travel to “make profitable” this excess CO2?
With the rise of electric cars, some voices are being raised. The latter denounce more polluting cars to be produced. And therefore not necessarily greener.
To be clear, theReuters agency conducted a study. The purpose of this is to determine how many kilometers an electric car driver must cover before make the production of your car profitable, from a CO2 point of view.
Of course, the answer is not as simple as saying “yes, electric cars pollute more”. The study therefore focuses on two comparable vehicles and widespread in the United States: the Tesla Model 3 for the electric camp, and the Toyota Corolla for the thermal camp.
The study estimates that the Tesla causes the emission of 8.1 million grams of CO2 during its production, against 5.5 million grams for the Toyota. The latter starts with a good lead, therefore.
But obviously, driving on gasoline necessarily emits carbon dioxide. This is where the Tesla is catching up.
Taking into account the energy mix of electricity production in the United States (with 23% coal), we will have to wait 21 725 km so that the Tesla pollutes less than the Toyota, taking into account its manufacture. On the other hand in Norway, where the electricity is much cleaner, the whole will pay for itself as soon as 13 500 km.
In short, according to the Reuters study, the production of an electric car is certainly more polluting, but will quickly pay for itself over the life of a car. In the worst case (very polluting electricity production like China or Poland), the Tesla pollutes less from 127,000 km.
Widely achievable, therefore.
