1st electric truck of the brand

Mercedes is taking its first steps in the electric heavy-duty segment with the unveiling of the eActros. A direct competitor of its American counterpart, the Tesla Semi.

This year, the electric is in full swing. If this is easily seen in the automotive market, it is also the case in the automotive industry. road freight segment. If we knew the Tesla Semi, a 100% electric truck in preparation at the Californian manufacturer, this time it’s the turn of Mercedes to announce its first electrified truck. Code name: Mercedes eActros.

A 100% electric truck

In test phase since 2018, the first Mercedes-Benz 100% electric truck reaches the catalog in most European countries.

Based on the thermal version of the same name, the Mercedes eActros is currently available in a three-axle configuration.

The truck has a rigid electric axle which integrates, in the center, two motors and a two-speed transmission. Continuous power is 330 kW, which equates to almost 450 hp, with a possible peak of 400 kW, or nearly 540 hp.

A range of 400 kilometers

The center of the chassis offers an important place intended to accommodate numerous batteries. Almost four 105 kWh blocks can be installed, for a total of 420 kWh.

With all this power, the Mercedes eActros can aim for a range of 400 kilometers. On the recharging side, the batteries can handle a power of 160 kW in direct current. The only downside is that it is not yet available on the fleets of transport companies.

In order to anticipate the downtime required for recharging, the truck is equipped with a system that allows the route to be adapted to the recharging needs as well as to the regulatory break time. Like the Tesla navigation system which finds superchargers on your journey.

Performance far from the Tesla Semi

Other manufacturers will soon market their electric heavy goods vehicle. This is particularly the case of Tesla Semi, 100% electric truck from Elon Musk.

Towed by 4 independent electric motors, they drive the 4 rear wheels and allow the truck to go from 0 to 100 km / h with a full load in less than 20 seconds, compared to a good minute for a conventional heavy vehicle.

In terms of autonomy, the Tesla Semi also offers double compared to the Mercedes eActros, with more than 800 km of autonomy announced.

Production starts next fall.

A match of the kings of the bitumen in anticipation?
