Who would’ve believed that ? An electric car has just finished on the podium at Pikes Peak, one of the most demanding and impressive races in the world!
Based in California, the company Unplugged Performance specializes in preparations from Tesla. Offering mechanical upgrades and body modifications, the firm has just distinguished itself by preparing a Model S for the very prestigious test of Pikes Peak.
As a reminder, Pikes Peak is an annual hill climb in Colorado that involves 156 turns over a distance of 19.93 km. Another special feature is the fact that the start line is at an altitude of 2,865 m and that the finish line is 1,440 m even higher. Hence the nickname ” the race to the clouds ».
Since its inception, this race has given the mechanics a hard time because oxygen is scarcer the more you climb to the top. Consequence, the engines do not have the same yield as the cars progress on the course.
This problem, electric vehicles do not suffer obviously not. It is undoubtedly for this, and to show the public its know-how, that Unplugged Performance hired a Tesla Model S Plaid. Driven by American driver Randy Pobst, the car climbed Pikes Peak in 6’57″220 and won the event in the Exhibition category.
Enough to allow the prepared Tesla to register in the 10 best cars, all engines combined ! A performance for a private team which does not seem to be helped by the Californian builder.
