Volkswagen lifts the veil on the SW variant of the new Golf R. On the menu for the station wagon: exclusive styling and 320 hp. But will it be offered in France?
Be careful, hot in front! The most powerful production Golf in history is making children! The new Golf R, presented in November 2020 and available to order since January 2021, is now available in a station wagon version.
Like the compact, this SW variant houses within it a 320 hp 2L TSI four-cylinder petrol engine and 420 Nm of torque. Like the compact, it also benefits from the 4Motion all-wheel drive and some DSG7 dual clutch gearbox.
Also equipped with larger and lighter brakes and a double electronic differential lock, the German station wagon announces a 0 to 100 km / h in 4.9 seconds (against 4.7 s for the Golf R without a backpack) and a maximum speed limited to 250 km / h, or 270 km / h thanks to the addition of the optional “R-Performance” pack. The latter also includes specific 19-inch alloy wheels and two additional driving modes: “Special”, for the Nürburgring, and “Drift”.
Style wise, no big surprise. The car is indeed an “R” model with its ground clearance lowered by 20 mm, its redesigned shields, its matte gray mirrors, its glossy black diffuser, its blue brake calipers and its two double tailpipes. It can also be recognized by logo « R » affixed to its grille and in the center of its tailgate or to the blue luminous border that runs between its front lights.
On board, same story. Mix and match, there are Sport seats up front, an exclusive leather steering wheel, brushed stainless steel pedals and digital instrumentation with specific display. For the first time on this sporty version, a tow ball allowing a traction of 1.9 tons is also offered as an option.
Finally, concerning the trunk volume, know that it is included between 611 and 1,942 liters.
Orders for the new Golf R SW open on July 8 in Germany and selected European markets. For the time being, it is not yet known whether the model will be offered in France.
