Opel to go 100% electric with a new Manta

Opel will quickly become a 100% electric brand! And to mark the occasion, the manufacturer promises a brand new Manta.

At the beginning of July, the large Stellantis group presented its strategy for the coming years. Of course, this strategy was placed under the sign of electrification. But the switch to electric will be done differently, and at different speeds depending on the group’s many brands (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Opel, etc.). Fiat, for example, will be 100% electric from 2030. But Opel will steal the show: the lightning brand has announced its total conversion to electric from 2028.

In practice, Opel will not offer only electric models in Europe, its main market. On the other hand, the brand has also planned to get started in China, and does not specify whether the cars sold there will be electric.

The return of the Opel Manta!

From 2024 in Europe, all Opels will be electrified, ie at least equipped with a hybrid system. And four years later, you will no longer be able to buy an Opel with a combustion engine in Europe. To mark the occasion, Opel has confirmed its floor on a new Manta. The latter will be inspired by the look of the coupe from the 1970s, on which the brand is already surfing with the Manta GSe, a retrofit and restomod version of its icon. Like a Renault with its next electric R5 and 4L, Opel will therefore bet on neo-retro to tackle its electric transition.

The new Manta should land by 2025, but Opel does not specify what form this new model will take. The “reimagined” Manta could therefore take the form of a small coupe, or, and it is more likely, of a dynamic crossover. To do this, Opel will be able to rely on the electric platforms announced by the Stellantis group. We are thinking in particular of the next STLA Medium, which promises a compact format and autonomy up to 500 km.
