A particular Porsche 356, the Glöckler-Porsche 356, will go on sale in August by the auction house RM Sotheby’s.
If everyone knows the Porsche 356, the legendary Porsche model with such an elegant line. On the other hand, it’s a safe bet the number of people knowing this cut copy with the tortured look is much less important. However, it is this very special copy that will soon be put on sale.
it’s about the Glöckler-Porsche 356 Carrera 1500 Coupé. Dated of 1954, it stands out in comparison to the other 356. It is a unique specimen designed for racing although it is only raced once.
Its designer, Walter Glöckler, ran a car dealership in Frankfurt. But when he wasn’t selling a car, he kept busy going to the racetrack, whether on two or four wheels. And since he still had a little bit of time left, he was working on the design of racing cars using mainly components from Porsche and Volkswagen.
The Glöckler-Porsche 356 Carrera is his seventh achievement. Initially built to participate in Mille Miglia from 1954, it will unfortunately not be able to take the start. Indeed, it could not be finalized in time. On the other hand, she will run the Liège-Rome-Liège with Helm Glöckler at the wheel, Walter’s cousin.
Visually, impossible to confuse this creation with the classic 356. The front is marked by the addition of an additional lighthouse in the center of the bumper as well as two rectangular lights. Night visibility shouldn’t be a problem behind the wheel!
The wheel arches are reworked and the added roof is cut off at the doors. The added glass section brings in more light. In order to facilitate access on board, this part opens with the door. The bezel is another specificity of this Glöckler-Porsche. Separated into 3, it rolls up and extends to the sides. Finally, the rear fenders are specific with the lights positioned on the fins, in the manner of Facel Vega (French brand created in 1954).
The engine of this 356 signed Glöckler is a 4 cylinder which also equips the 550 Spyder.
This unique model will be sold by RM Sotheby’s at the Monterey sale in California scheduled for August 13 and 14.
