Nissan presents the new sound signature of its electric models, called “Canto”: the compact Leaf is the first model in the range to be equipped with it.
At the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan unveiled, along with the IMx concept car, the future sound signature of its 100% electric vehicles. Called “Canto”, which means “I sing” in Latin, this new signature is now deployed on the production models of the Japanese manufacturer, starting with the Nissan Leaf this summer.
This sound warning system is also called “AVAS” (for Approaching Vehicle Audible System): it is a safety device allowing other road users, in particular pedestrians, to be warned of the approach of an electric vehicle, with the same noise level as a thermal model.
« It was important that we not only created sound that complied with the new regulations, but also aligned with Nissan’s branding. We have always been pioneers in safety and innovation and it’s great to know that we are helping to shape the future of electrification.»Says Paul Speed-Andrews, Noise and Vibration Development Manager at Nissan Technical Center Europe, which we discover in this video.
An AVAS was already in force on the more than half a million units of Nissan Leaf previously marketed to date, but this new sound signature was specially created by Nissan in Japan and adapted by the brand’s teams in Europe. , with a specific sound spectrum. “Canto” is activated automatically from 0 to 30 km / h, and varies in intensity according to the speed and acceleration of the vehicle.
With electric models more and more present in our streets, the sound signature is a new way for manufacturers to differentiate themselves, like Fiat, which has equipped its new electric Fiat 500 with a very “dolce vita” Italian melody. »For his AVAS.
