Obviously, on board, there is not much to do with the 300 SL original from 1952. Even if the brand with the star always speaks of top of the range, “noble materials” and “meticulous finishes”. From now on, technology is everywhere as witnessed the driving position, dubbed “hyper-analog” by Mercedes.
There is a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, integrated in a three-dimensional visor, and a large 11.9-inch adjustable vertical center display positioned on the central console. The latter benefits from the second-generation MBUX infotainment system, with AMG-specific displays and content.
The dashboard is aviation inspired. Symmetrical, it “is designed as a sculptural and powerful wing and structured in two superimposed sections”, details Mercedes. “The lower section of the dashboard unfolds smoothly from the center console, connecting the two elements seamlessly. », Continues the brand. Everything is embellished with four galvanized turbine type nozzles.
Another strong point of the new SL: its versatility. For the first time since 1989, he is in fact reconnecting with a 2 + 2 configuration
, which allows it to accommodate up to 4 passengers. Mistrust, however, two small seats in the back are only intended for people up to 1.50 m tall. If the rear seats are not needed, a windshield can protect the front passengers drafts in the neck. The second row of seats can also be used as additional storage space.Mercedes has not yet announced the date of presentation of this new generation of SL but its marketing should take place in 2022. We already know that the car will opt for a canvas hood after two generations of hard roofs. She will also benefit for the first time from the 4Matic + all-wheel drive. Finally, it will be based on a composite aluminum structure which will optimize its weight and rigidity.
On the mechanical side, the model should be inspired by the AMG GT by borrowing from it in particular V8 4.0 biturbo engine. An in-line six-cylinder could also be offered at the entry level while a hybrid version could also be part of the top-of-the-range version SL 73 AMG. For the latter, a power of about 800 horsepower is even mentioned!
