F1 is preparing for its revolution in 2022: here’s a taste!

In 2022, F1 will make its revolution. The technical regulations will be completely transformed! The aim is to prevent the creating turbulence too strong behind the cars, to encourage the cars to stay wheel to wheel and facilitate overtaking. To better help the public to visualize these important changes, Formula 1 has therefore decided to present a full-size model, built according to the technical regulations of 2022.

Everything to reduce turbulence

According to F1 technical studies, when a current car follows another 20 meters away, it loses about 35% downforce aerodynamic, and 46% at 10 meters. Suddenly, it is difficult for the driver who wants to pass to stay close to the car in front to be able to attempt an attack. The new model promises a loss of only 4% at 20 meters, 18% at 10 meter. Spectacular progress, which remains to be confirmed: in their search for maximum support, the teams will probably create more turbulence than expected by F1. But there is hope.

Technically, this progress is achieved through the development of a much more aggressive ground effect. Under the floor, two huge tunnels have been dug, and feed a giant diffuser in back. The vast majority of downforce will therefore come from under the car, especially as the ailerons have been simplified

. There are also two small fins above the front wheels, responsible for smoothing the air passing above.

Similar motor, improved safety

And these wheels, they change completely. The rims grow, and pass from 13 to 18 inches. Always in a concern of air smoothing, they will be covered by aerodynamic discs. The engine is broadly unchanged. Controls will be stricter, and they will have to run on E10 fuel, with 10% bioethanol.

Finally, the safety of single-seaters has also been reinforced. The frontal and side crash tests will be more severe, with more resistant structures. In response to Romain Grosjean’s accident, the engine will have to be able to separate from the chassis without piercing the tank, which created the fireball at the time. Because of these reinforced elements and the larger wheels, the minimum weight will drop from 752 kg to 790 kg.
