Unmarked radar cars: where to find them?

Unmarked radar cars are more and more numerous on our roads, thanks to the outsourcing of their driving by private companies. Here’s where to find them!

Initially launched in March 2013, the unmarked radar cars (or RMNG, for New Generation Mobile Radars) are now 385 in the whole of France, according to Road Safety figures at 1is January 2021. It is always difficult to distinguish them since the models used are particularly versatile: Peugeot 308, Dacia Sandero, Citroën Berlingo, etc…

In detail, 302 of these cars are driven by the police, and 83 are driven by private operators of outsourced driving. Still according to this official source, “The outsourcing of the driving of radar cars makes it possible to free up and better use the skills and qualifications of the police, in particular to carry out other types of checks on the roads (alcohol and narcotics) or other dangerous behavior. “.

In reality, the privatization of radar cars is a very lucrative business, since it allows multiply by twenty the profits of these “mobile-mobile” radars, according to the League for the Defense of Drivers, which campaigns to report them.

Soon 450 radar cars throughout France

By the end of the year, these radar cars will number 450 throughout France : this will be made possible by the reconversion of vehicles currently driven by the police, in order to send them to private operators.

The fleet of these outsourced wheeled radars will then be increased to 223. Here are details of the regions where you will find them:

Radar cars currently in circulation:

  • Normandy: 26 vehicles
  • Brittany: 18 vehicles
  • Pays-de-la-Loire: 19 vehicles
  • Center-Val de Loire: 20 vehicles
