Audi has unveiled its buggy for the Dakar 2022! The RS Q e-tron is electric, but assisted by a heat engine to charge the batteries. 670 hp are on the program!
Audi is preparing for its big comeback in competition! The brand with the rings will be at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023, but before that, heading for the Dakar. And Audi is not lacking in ambitions for its first official participation: to be the first to fight for victory with an electric vehicle!
In practice, this Audi RS Q e-tron is not 100% electric. Indeed, if the wheels are well driven by two electric motors (taken from the Formula E single-seater), a heat engine takes care of recharging the battery. Steps that can reach 800 km, all obviously without limit, it was the only solution to arrive safely. The engine in question is taken from the old DTM car, and is still running between 4,500 and 6,000 rpm, to maximize its efficiency. As a bonus, the buggy can recover electricity when braking.
For its part, the battery has a capacity of 50 kWh, the equivalent of a Renault Zoe, and weighs around 370 kg. Audi does not specify the total weight of its RS Q e-tron, but announces a 670 hp power ! However, the organizers have not yet decided whether Audi will be able to use this full power in the race.
For the rest, Audi has bet on a futuristic look to announce itself as the rally car of the future. the RS Q e-tron must now begin its test program, before the Dakar in January 2022. It will then face the usual Toyota and Mini, but also Sebastien Loeb’s Prodrive buggy.
