a monster dedicated to drag races

Chevrolet unveils the new COPO Camaro, a model intended for “drag races” and offered with several V8 engines up to 580 horsepower.

The Camaro is Chevrolet’s iconic sports coupe: if it looks like its future will be 100% electric, the current generation is not yet ready to give up its place, if we are to believe this new supercharged COPO version, marketed in the USA.

In the 1960s, Chevrolet was making performance parts under the Central Office Production Order (COPO) brand, which could be fitted to models ordered by specific companies, such as fleets of trucks or police vehicles. Some Chevrolet dealers who are passionate about tuning have diverted this equipment to build power-packed Camaros for drag racing.

In 2012, Chevrolet had already offered a limited edition of 69 copies of the Chevrolet COPO Camaro, in a nod to its 1969 elder. Today, the new generation of Camaro also has an exclusive COPO badged version, not approved for the road but intended for amateurs of “drag races”.

Chevrolet COPO Camaro: a gigantic V8 under the hood

In addition to its decorative stickers and specific wheels, the new Chevrolet COPO Camaro is distinguished by its specific carbon fiber hood, with a huge bump: enough to accommodate its gigantic engine 9.4-liter V8 of displacement (COPO 572 “Big Block”), displaying the power of 430 horsepower

. The cast iron block features aluminum heads, forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, and forged aluminum pistons.

However, despite its impressive displacement, this engine will not be the most powerful in the range. Two other variations are also available:

  • COPO 427, with an atmospheric V8 of 7.0 liters and 470 horsepower ;
  • COPO 350, with a supercharged V8 of 5.7 liters developing 580 horsepower.

All versions of the Chevrolet COPO Camaro feature a three-speed automatic transmission, transmitting power only to the rear wheels, whilea braking parachute will also be offered as an option.

For this model year 2022, the production of the Chevrolet COPO Camaro will not be limited in number. It is offered at a starting price from $ 105,500 (approximately 89.100 €) for the 430 hp version, $ 117,500 (approximately 99.200 €) for the 470 hp version, as well as $ 130,000 (approximately 109.800 €) for the most powerful version of 580 hp.
