Have you ever noticed that the names of Peugeot brand models all end with the number 8? We explain why!
With the exception of Rifter, Traveler and utility vehicles, all cars in Peugeot’s current lineup all carry names ending with the number 8. To understand why, we have to go back to 1929, to the arrival of the Peugeot 201: this model was the first to inaugurate the model nomenclature of the lion brand, with three figures articulated around a central zero, then more recentlya double zero for SUVs.
The first number (2) indicates the category of the model (here versatile city cars), while the last number (1) indicates the generation. The Peugeot 201 will then be replaced by the 202, itself replaced by the 203, then the 204, the 205, 206, 207, then the 208 I… Which is replaced by the 208 II!
As you can see, the history of this obvious numbering became more complicated at the start of the 2010s: in fact, the Peugeot 308 was about to be renewed, except that the name “309” had already been used in the years. 1980. The lion brand finds itself in an impasse: it must an important choice, since calling “310” the replacement for the 308 would no longer make sense.
It was then that Peugeot decided to “Freeze” the last digit its numbering to “8”, in order to capitalize on the notoriety of its models, which will now always keep the same name down through the generations. The opportunity also to clear any confusion as to the understanding of this nomenclature, in the face of the majority of its competitors who keep the names of their models over time.
This choice is also motivated by the fact that the number 8 is a lucky charm in China, synonymous with luck and success. The Chinese are snapping up telephone numbers and license plates containing the number 8, but also apartments located at 8th floor: and why not the cars whose name ends in 8? Here is an additional opportunity that Peugeot wanted to seize, in order to conquer the Asian market.
