why the Tesla robot is more serious than it looks

Elon Musk and Tesla are famous for wacky one-off ads. But the Tesla Bot could be important for the future of the brand. Explanations.

Tesla is truly a separate builder. Its cars are very different from the rest of the world production, the way it operates and sells too. Not to mention his whimsical boss, Elon Musk, who likes to govern via Twitter and run crazy ads on a regular basis without worrying about whether the company will be able to follow them.

So when Tesla announces something as extravagant as the Tesla Bot, easy to take it with a smile and put it down to yet another Elon Musk fantasy. But behind the wacky presentation at the brand’s AI Day with a costumed dancer, may well be hiding part of the brand’s future.

Tesla, leader in artificial intelligence?

Indeed, Tesla is much more than just a car manufacturer. This is also why the brand benefits from a extraordinary stock price. Rightly or wrongly, investors see in the electric specialist a future world leader in many areas : batteries, electrical infrastructure, aerospace but also artificial intelligence. Between its infotainment screens taken to the extreme and far more efficient than most of its competitors, and the semi-autonomous Autopilot driving system, Tesla is one of the most advanced companies in the field.

In the brand’s specialized conference, AI Day, Elon Musk did not show any great modesty: “Tesla is probably the leader in applied artificial intelligence, today “. And with cars clad with sensors, boosted by relatively powerful computers, the manufacturer takes advantage ofa full-scale testing program,

notably thanks to Autopilot users in Beta mode.

A heart drawn from cars

In short, Tesla also sees itself as a robotics company. So logical to see the brand unveil a robot ! If the Tesla Bot presented last week should remain in prototype state (a working model should be unveiled in 2022), it therefore signals a desire toapply the achievements of the automotive division in other areas. Moreover, in the heart of this robot hides a central computer pulled straight from the brand’s cars. We can therefore imagine that it also recovers a good part of its sensors, to analyze and understand its environment.

According to Elon Musk, the Tesla Bot should be used to fill repetitive or difficult tasks, which could range from the slow and painstaking construction of rockets for sister company SpaceX to, according to the South African, a butler who can do your grocery shopping for you. Let us not forget either that Elon Musk aims to colonize Mars, in the long term: robots will then be essential.

A future that investors believe: Tesla’s price has jumped more than 5% since the robot was presented at AI Day on August 20.
