what do the four rings of its logo mean?

These four rings have been present in the automotive landscape since 1932, already. But do you know the real meaning of the Audi logo? We explain the history of the German brand through it.

Audi, it is one of the most reputable automobile manufacturers in the world. One of the oldest too, although it was difficult before the 1980s. And the brand can also boast of having a logo simple, quickly identifiable, composed of four linked rings. But what does it really mean?

The creation of Audi

Audi has a rather complex history. It all starts in 1899 when August Horch, German businessman, decides to set up his first company: Horch & Cie. After several years spent with his partner, he left the company to create another and was forced to choose a new name. “Audi” is the Latin translation of “Horch” which means ” to listen“It sounds good, he keeps it and founded his business in 1909.

He marketed his first car the following year and continued to sell until the financial crisis of 1929. Impossible then to imagine surviving without merging with other brands and forming a collective. Four brands will then join forces: Audi Automobilwerke GmbH

, Horch, DKW and Wanderer.

4 rings for 4 brands

It is on the occasion of the merger of the manufacturers that the famous logo will appear! Auto Union AG was thus born and will adopt the image of the 4 entwined rings for the 4 companies. You may have already seen this logo affixed to a Auto Union racing, already gray at the time, name that remained until 1985.

The logo will remain almost identical since the creation of Auto Union until today and the Audi brand. It is currently flat, without particular lettering, in order to stick to any product and to be available in all its forms.
