are winter tires compulsory?

From this year, winter equipment becomes compulsory in certain departments of France. Motorhomes are also affected.

The Law for the Modernization, Development and Protection of Mountain Territories, known as “Mountain Law 2”, makes compulsory from this year, during the period between 1is November and March 31, winter equipment (winter tires, chains or socks) in certain French departments.

Like light, utility or heavy-duty vehicles, campervans and converted vans are also affected by this measure. Indeed, during the winter period, they will have to be equipped withspecific winter equipment when they travel on 48 departments concerned by this regulation, even if you are just passing through and not staying in these departments.

Motorhomes: winter tires, chains or socks required

In practice, recreational vehicles will have to be fitted on all four wheels of winter or all-season tires

(3PMSF approved, which can be recognized by a logo representing a 3-peaked mountain with a snowflake), or failing that, a pair of chains or snow socks on both drive wheels.

The areas concerned by this equipment obligation are identified in the highway code by two new road signs (pictured in our slideshow): the panels B58 and B59, which indicate the entry and exit of the zone, respectively.
