Unveiled as a concept car at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is officially announced for the month of June 2022 after several postponements.
We have been hearing about the futur SUV Alfa Romeo. Called Tonale in reference to a mountain path, the “Passo del Tonale”, this compact model should help revive the sales of the Italian brand. But he is late, so that he will not arrive at the end of the year but in June 2022 concerning its production. We explain what we know … for the moment.
Little official information but rolling prototypes : we must keep an eye open to flush out what will be the future bestseller (?) Alfa Romeo. The Tonale will not replace the great Stelvio, which will be restyled next year. The Tonale will take its place in the heart of the range. The brand at Biscione should present its novelty shortly but its general manager, Jean-Philippe Imperato, meant he was not ready.
In question, a need for general development and especially to considerably improve the plug-in hybrid version. As a reminder, this “cleaner” version will be the manufacturer’s first, which is far behind in the field ofelectrification. And with his sporting past, the latter prefers to refine the dynamic capacities of his baby.
With the creation of Stellantis, one would have thought that the SUV would use the EMP2 platform vehicles of the PSA group. Unfortunately, this will not be the case for lack of time. Thus, the Tonale will be based on the platform of Jeep Renegade et Compass. Hence the possibility of offering a PHEV model. Like them, it will be available in traction or 4-wheel drive. The novelty will be produced at the Pomigliano d’Arco site, near Naples, where the Fiat Panda is already assembled.
Regarding the design, we can refer to the concept car presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2019. Compared to a larger Stelvio, the Tonale should tighten its lines and reduce its overhangs. We can already see it with its “V” grille and a shortened front. The rear window should also be more inclined, in the fashion of SUV Coupe while leaving enough space on board.
Hopefully we will know a little more when it is presented, potentially in a few weeks.
