500,000 lost sales due to chip shortage

Due to the shortage of semiconductors, Renault has had to revise its production forecasts downwards – half a million copies will go missing.

The shortage of semiconductors, these electronic chips which abound in modern cars, continues to wreak havoc on manufacturers. Renault had, earlier in the year, estimated a lack of production of 220,000 cars for the year 2021. But this figure was obviously far too optimistic, since the group at the Diamond has just updated its forecast. It will be around 500,000 vehicles that will not be produced because of the crisis. In question, a new wave of Covid in Malaysia, one of the leaders in semiconductor production.

However, do not panic at Renault. Clotilde Delbos, CFO and Deputy CEO, says the operating margin for the year should remain the same than for the first half, or 2.8%. All thanks to significant cost containment measures, with a big plan of 2 billion euros in savings ahead of schedule.

Finally, Renault drew on its inventory to compensate for the lack of production: it fell from 470,000 vehicles in stock to around 340,000 in one year.

Renault Arkana and Dacia Spring drive sales

Above all, the cars that Renault can deliver are selling well. In particular, the Arkana Coupe SUV was ordered more than 41,000 times in Europe since March. Much better than Renault expected. And like 56% of these Arkana were ordered in hybrid, the average price is quite high, which is good for Renault’s margin.

Good start also for the Dacia Spring, which recorded more than 30,000 orders since its launch last spring. On the other hand, Zoe is in trouble (but remains a leader in electric): Sales fell more than 26% compared to last year, to settle at 47,000 during the third quarter.
