the original designer hates the modern version

The Lamborghini LPI 800-4 Countach was supposed to pay homage to the eponymous icon of the brand … But this homage is not to everyone’s taste, especially that of the designer of the original version!

This year the legendary Lamborghini Countach celebrates 50 years. To mark the occasion (and, of course, to put money back in the coffers), Lamborghini presented a tribute to its icon: the Countach LPI 800-4. Picking up widely the technical (sheet) of the Sian, with its 814 hp micro-hybrid V12, it is obviously inspired by the very first Countach.

But now, the designer of the latter does not see it all very well. Marcello Gandini, legend of automotive design to whom we owe, in addition to the Countach, the Miura, the Lancia Stratos, but also the Renault Super Cinq or the Citroën BX, among other things, cracked a robust press release to say the least.

A design contrary to Gandini’s values?

The designer explains that at no point was it consulted for the creation of this new Countach, contrary to what Lamborghini’s communication might suggest. Before the release of the exclusive supercar, he was invited by the manufacturer to an interview about the 50 years of the Countach

, during which he was given a model of what would become the LPI 800-4. But he then thinks it is simply a concept in tribute to the legend of the brand, and is far from suspecting that Lamborghini is working on its production.

Above all, Gandini denounces the design itself, which he says far removed from its values : « I built my whole identity as a designer, especially when I was working on Lamborghini supercars, around a particular concept. Every new model I designed had to be an innovation, something completely different from the previous models. (…) Taking a model from the past represents for me the negation of the fundamental principles of my DNA« .

In short, it is the war between Lamborghini and its historic designer. Above all, this missive could well lose a little resale value for the 122 copies, all already sold. Can we indeed speak of a true homage if the creator of the original work is so fiercely opposed to it?
