what we already know about the little sportswoman!

Excellent news for all “Miata” fans. Mazda has confirmed that the next generation of its little roadster will still have a thermal engine.

Rumors were rife about the future of the Mazda MX-5. the best-selling convertible in the world, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special edition, will indeed remain thermal. If it was first a question of simple or rechargeable hybridization, and even complete electrification, it will ultimately not be the case.

So, this mechanic?

These are our English colleagues from home Coach which have received confirmation from the manufacturer. The next generation of MX-5 will thus embed the new 4-cylinder 2.0 Skyactiv-X equipped with a small compressor. This engine has already been used in the range by the Mazda 3 and CX-30 since this year.

The block adopts a new technology which “combines all the qualities of a gasoline engine and a diesel”, according to the Japanese brand. It burns gasoline more efficiently thanks to the technology Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI). This system makes it possible to release more power while drastically limiting polluting emissions and consumption. As a reminder, it currently develops a maximum of 186 hp and would now be the only one to survive in the range. We would talk about different power levels

as has always been the case with the “Miata”.

But this engine will not be alone under the hood since this is where the “electrified” part understood by Mazda takes over. We will find coupled a 48V micro-hybrid system, noticeable at start-up and during strong acceleration. This new engine should therefore develop 30% more torque compared to the old Skyactiv-G 2.0, theoretically going from 205 to 266 Nm.

Other crispy information

For all purists, Autocar has also confirmed the presence of the manual gearbox. The weight of the car would thus be contained around the ton, without disruptive devices, batteries or unnecessary four-wheel drive.

Concerning style, Mazda explained that it wanted to create a new visual identity with a modified grille. The LED headlights should also change shape, without making the MX-5 too mean (that’s not the spirit). Inside, the little sports car would adopt more sophisticated materials, a digital dashboard and modern controls. In the same vein as other recent products indicating Mazda’s move upmarket.
