wireless charging soon?

In Austria, a wireless induction charging system is being tested by the local taxi fleet. Very promising, it allows very high transmission efficiency!

Recharging electric cars requires a small organization, which you recharge at home or whether you go through a stationderecharge. And for that, you have to connect directly by cable. But recharging your electric vehicle may be on the verge of a small revolution. Indeed, like what already exists for smartphones, the induction charge, meanwhile, allows wireless charging, directly from the ground. With this solution, no more tangling in the cables!

Still very little deployed in the small world of electric vehicles, Austria has taken the lead and is entering the test phase with its “eTaxi Austria” project. Explanations.

A life-size test

Wired charging is, as you know, familiar to all electric car owners. The latter involves taking a cable one meter long and several kilos out of the car, and connecting it to a charging station or to a wallbox. In short, it takes time and it is binding!

Thus, induction charging of electric cars could put an end to these constraints and greatly facilitate charging! This is exactly what the project is testing «ETaxi Austria», with the company’s Matrix charging technology Easelink, based in Graz, Austria. It consists of a charging connector positioned on the underbody of the vehicle and a charging station in the company car park. The system had been presented at the beginning of IAA Mobility showroom in Munich, in a new electronic platform from the supplier Schaeffler.

Almost 100% transmission efficiency

The induction charging system has a special function. As soon as the electric car parks, the Matrix charging connector lowers automatically

and the vehicle is charged via the physical connection. Developers promise transmission efficiency more than 99%. Charging power is normally 11 kilowatts (kW), but with 400 volts it can be increased to 22 kW for alternating current and 50 kW for direct current.

As the pad embedded in the ground is particularly threatened by dirt outside, the Matrix charging system has an integrated cleaning system. It automatically blows air from the bottom of the connector until the connection between it and the pad is established. Integrated cleaning fins are also used to loosen foreign objects.

According to Easelink, the loading dock can withstand a load of 2.5 tons on the wheels. The connector, on the other hand, weighs only 4 kilos. Not really enough to increase the weight of the car. Thanks to its compact design, the Matrix charging system can already be compatible with more than 90% of electric vehicles on the market, according to the developers!

The biggest disadvantage of the few vehicles available and rechargeable by induction today remains the loss of efficiency. This manifests itself in the pressure drop in the form of waste heat. The “eCharge” of BMW for the plug-in hybrid BMW 530e, for example, has a pressure drop of approx. 15 to 20%.
