The electric car favored by the shortage of gasoline?

A study by Volkswagen in the UK has shown that the fuel supply problem has pushed drivers more towards electric.

With the rise in fuel prices, many motorists have thought of alternatives, such as the electric car or bioethanol (E85). But in the United Kingdom, the crisis was twofold with a shortage of truck drivers, leading to a lack of supplies and shortages. Did this influence the drivers more? Volkswagen therefore led a study among 2,000 Britons at the end of October, when the crisis was in full swing.

More than a third think of electric

The results of the survey show that « 35% of respondents consider electric more for their next car purchase, in response to the fuel crisis. “ And these people aren’t just interested in the new car market. The German brand adds that 32% are also considering buying second-hand.

Another interesting fact, young people are much more susceptible to panic in front of the shortage. About 30% of 18-34 year olds admit to buying gasoline urgently, against only 7% of 55-64 year olds and 3% of 65-74 year olds. Do we become wiser as we get older?

Electric takes off across the Channel

According to figures from the SMMT, sales of all-electric vehicles are exploding in the UK. Over the first 10 months of 2021, they jumped 86% in a market of + 3% all engines combined. Thereby, they represented 10% of sales against 5.5% in 2020. It’s much more than in France (8.9% in 2021) or in Italy (4.3%). And the latest figures seem to prove the study right, since electricity even peaked at 15% last October!

A nuance, however, super-ethanol, non-existent among our English friends, is also on the rise in France. Appreciated for its lower price at the pump, the E85 biofuel tripled its market share in 2021 at 2.9%, against 1% in 2020, notably under the leadership of Dacia.
