Goodyear’s airless tire put to the test on the Tesla Model 3

To prove that its Airless airless tires are very efficient, the American manufacturer Goodyear installed and tested them on the Tesla Model 3

What will the tire of the future look like? Anyway, Goodyear is not lacking in imagination and resources. A few years ago, the manufacturer presented a very futuristic spherical tire, taken from the Citroën Autonomous Mobility Vision concept. Here, the American company is walking, finally rolling, in Michelin’s footsteps with its Airless tires.

After an autonomous shuttle tested this summer In Jacksonville, Florida, Goodyear is showing off its airless tires in a new video. And they don’t fit just any car, in this case the Tesla Model 3, the hugely popular high-performance electric. These images were shot on a closed circuit at the brand’s headquarters in Akron, Ohio (United States).

A puncture-proof tire

Like Michelin, these tires do not have an inner tube, replaced by a complex honeycomb structure. In addition to their lack of punctures, they would be safer, more enduring, require less maintenance (inflation, pressure sensor) and therefore greener, which explains their logical association with electric vehicles.

“We are delighted to progress on this new phase of testing and to expand the imagination on the possibilities of airless tires”, says the program director, “We have shown that non-pneumatic tires can reach motorway speeds while maintaining the dynamic behavior required by a motorist”.

When on our cars?

Although very promising, these tires are still only prototypes. Goodyear has yet to rule on a possible launch of this technology on our future cars. So do not count on a serialization before 2025.

At Michelin, the Uptis tire unveiled in 2019 was tested on the Navya shuttle, the Chevrolet Bolt or the electric Mini. The French manufacturer has mentioned availability in 2024 with GM if the tests prove to be conclusive. The Japanese Bridgestone also has its airless model developed for a decade AirFree, but mainly applied to the bicycle.
