Toyota marked the history of the World Rally Championship in particular with its resounding victory last year. But did you know that the brand’s first vehicle to win the constructors’ title in 1993 was the Celica GT Four?
Today, everyone knows Toyota. The brand renowned for its reliability has produced legendary cars such as the Corolla, the Supra and the Land Cruiser. In recent years, the manufacturer has also been shining in rally. He notably won the world crown in 2021 and intends to do the same this year. But did you know that it owes its first crown to the incredible Celica GT Four?
Different from what we know today
In the 90s, the World Rally Championship was very different from what we know today. The tests were indeed much longer and their surface much more uneven. During the African events, we were sometimes very close to the rally-raid… It was therefore necessary to have reliable 4-wheel drive vehicles. They had to be able to perform consistently in hellish conditions.
A legendary vehicle and livery
That’s when the Celica GT Four hits the track. With its white, red and green livery signed Castrol, it quickly became an icon of the discipline.. She wins three years in a row the Drivers’ World Championship from 1992 to 1994. But also that of the constructors in 93 and 94. All while giving us absolutely spectacular images.
