Auto Plus has identified, from a study, three models that are far too expensive to repair.
It’s sometimes a bit of a lottery when the estimate arrives: the maintenance price of car can vary enormously from one model to another. The cost of labor, the complexity of the construction and of course the price of the parts weigh on the final bill, which is sometimes much too high. This is what the body is responsible for controlling SRA, for Automotive Safety and Repair. His reports follow changes in car repair prices and spare parts. Interesting metrics, which are followed very closely, in particular by insurers.
In the annual report for the year 2021, Auto Plus sought some interesting data. For a fuller report, see issue 1761 of the magazine, dated 06/03/2022. But let’s dwell here on an inevitably important question: which car costs too much to maintain ?
A very bad report card for Renault: the latest generation of Clio is quite simply the most expensive in its category to repair after a collision. Maintenance prices at Renault in general are 3% higher than average. It’s the same thing for the Captur 2, more expensive than a Peugeot 2008 for example.
As you can imagine, premium brands like Audi, BMW or Mercedes are not not the most economical to maintain. And the logic is respected on the side of compact sedans, a segment in particular occupied by the Renault Megane, Peugeot 308, Volkswagen Golf or even the BMW 1 Series or Mercedes Class A. It is the latter which inherits the “victory”: with typical costs estimated at 138 € by the SRA
. To put in front of 101 € for the same work on a Peugeot 308 or even 88 € for a Toyota Auris 2!It’s very simple, the brand of Elon Musk is the second most expensive in maintenance, all categories combined, just behind Porsche. Just that ! One would have imagined that the reliability and relative mechanical simplicity of the electric models would provide Tesla with rather contained costs, but this is not the case. In total, maintenance costs are 61% higher than the overall average ! A Tesla Model 3 is 23% more expensive to maintain than the average. And, according to the scale established by the SRA, a Model S costs €141 to have it repaired, where a Mercedes E-Class will only cost you €96!
In short, figures to keep in mind when buying, new or used, one of these models.
