Stellantis shuts down its factories in Rennes and Sochaux

The management of Stellantis has decided to place its factories in Rennes and Sochaux on hold for lack of available semiconductors. A decision that upsets the production schedule of the French group.

The semiconductor crisis strikes again a French manufacturer. This time it is the Stellantis group, which is forced to limit its production for lack of components.

A shutdown until July for the Stellantis factories

The lack of semiconductors will therefore have been right for the production of Peugeot vehicles in France. The Rennes site, which notably produces the new 308 and 5008, will be closed until at least July 1. The 2,000 employees of the site will therefore have to wait to hope for a resumption of production. Same thing for the Sochaux site, which has been shut down since June 15. It is in Sochaux that the Peugeot 3008 are produced in particular.one of the best-selling SUVs in France.

In total, 12,000 vehicles cannot be produced on the Sochaux site. Pending the resumption of production, the management of Stellantis has indicated that it will take advantage of this shutdown of the assembly lines to make “upskill employees”

. A situation that has a cost for the employees, since those who will not be in training will be paid at 84% of their net salary.

A shortage that is here to stay

This shortage of semiconductor could still last. This is what we told you on AutoPlus.fr not long ago. The speeches are more and more pessimistic on the date of the end of this shortage. Some manufacturers and some countries are talking about a return to normal for the end of 2024. Others explain that this shortage will end during the first half of 2023.

Despite the major investments planned by the public authorities (Europe will invest 43 billion euros), semiconductor production is likely to be very tight in the coming months. With the consequences, factories closed, employees on technical unemployment and significant delays in deliveries.
