Cars of the week: aboard the Cupra UrbanRebel Concept

Cupra, the young sports brand of Seat, will multiply the specific models, including a 100% electric city car, announced by a spectacular concept.

Launched in 2018, the Cupra brand was initially content to market vitaminized and rebadged Seat models (the Ateca, then the Leon). Then the manufacturer took a step at the end of 2020 with the arrival of the Formentor cross-over, the first model exclusively baptized Cupra, without equivalent at the parent company Seat. Will follow, a year later, the Born, derived from the compact electric VW, the ID. 3.

And by 2025, Cupra has announced the arrival of three other new models (read opposite), including a battery-powered city car prefigured by a show car thatcar plus was able to find out in detail.

4.03 m long, the UrbanRebel Concept plays mini-sports with a muscular and racy design. The ribbed bonnet, the grille pierced with large air inlets, the sculpted profile and the rear which sports a very aerodynamic spoiler as well as an XL diffuser announce the color. And the brand has confirmed it to us: in terms of design, this concept is very close to the production version, scheduled for 2025. However, not sure that the large 21′ wheels and the superb mirrors will be retained. On the other hand, the theme of the triangle, which can be found almost everywhere (headlamp units, daytime running and rear lights, logos, inserts on the rims, etc.) represents the new signature that the next Cupra will sport.

The sporty interior is in tune with the exterior look. All controls are oriented towards the driver, who has here a driving simulator style steering wheel. The digital meter unit comprises a main screen, assisted by two other retractable side elements. Finally, the essential multifunction touch screen sits at the top of the dashboard, in the extension of a thin central console which accommodates storage, the gear lever being located behind the steering wheel. The finish is very correct and, despite the use of many materials made in 3D printing for this concept, the perceived quality is satisfactory. On the other hand, the habitability appears limited, with cramped rear seats in particular. Fortunately, the production model will abandon the rear bucket seats in favor of a more welcoming bench seat. Ditto for the trunk which, in the end, will benefit from a vast tray under the floor.

A traction vehicle, the Urban-Rebel houses its electric motor at the front. With a power of 166 kW (226 hp), it promises a range of 440 km. Ambitious, especially since the brand gave no information on the battery, housed in the floor. Expected in 2025, the Cupra will have its equivalent at Skoda and VW, and the three cousins will be produced in the same factory, in Martorell (Spain).

A roadmap already revealed

In addition to the UrbanRebel in 2025, Cupra will launch the Terramar in early 2024. This compact SUV will be offered in thermal and plug-in hybrid capable of traveling around 100 km in electric. It will be followed, at the end of 2024, by the Tavascan, another 100% electric SUV.

At the end of 2021, Citroën unveiled a very cute buggy concept, based on the Ami, its small electric quadricycle (see Auto Plus n°1746).

Finally, this show prototype will be marketed (1) at the rate of 50 copies only, numbered and invoiced at 8,890 € each (bonus of 900 € deducted). Compared to the €6,890 (€900 bonus deducted) of the base model, that might seem expensive.

But with its specific look (canvas roof, mass-tinted khaki paint, 14′ gold rims, bumper reinforcements, fender flares, etc.) and its lack of doors, this Beach Friend is a hit, isn’t it?

1. On sale since June 21 on

The next BMW M 2 will be officially unveiled in October, for marketing scheduled for April 2023. In the meantime, the manufacturer is making our mouths water with this still camouflaged model, used to finalize the development.

Propulsion vitamin (its inline six-cylinder biturbo should flirt with 450 hp), the Bavarian will be offered in BVA version with automatic gearbox (8 reports) or manual.

Do Europeans have anything to worry about?

Back in Europe since the end of 2020, the ex-British MG, which became Chinese in 2007, is riding high. With four models and 135 dealerships in France (150 planned for the end of 2022), the manufacturer is experiencing strong growth and is setting sales records. And it is not about to stop. Indeed, the brand has just unveiled the Mulan, a compact sedan (4.29 m) 100% electric, expected in Europe by next year. This future rival of the Renault Megane E-Tech and the VW ID.3 has a 150 kW (204 hp) block placed on the front axle.

Marketed with two types of batteries (51 or 64 kWh), the Mulan (which should be called MG 4 on the Old Continent) promises up to 600 km of autonomy. Sold for the equivalent of €28,500 in China, this MG could remain under the €35,000 mark here.

This is enough to worry about the Renault and the VW, which start at €37,200 and €44,680 respectively (excluding bonuses).

Future collector in sight

Not really in luck at the last 24 Hours of Le Mans (see p. 52)Alpine forsakes endurance for a time.

He is refocusing on his other favorite field, rallying, with a limited series in the colors of the Berlinette which took part in the 1975 Tour de Corse. Limited to 150 units and sold for €80,000, this A110 of 300 something in yellow livery ( with black bonnet and roof), 18′ white rims as well as a deco homage to the original A110.

The Grand Cherokee comes back very confident!

Back in Europe with a fifth opus only available as a plug-in hybrid (380 hp), the Grand Cherokee starts at €81,600 in the Limited finish. But the bill can quickly fly away, since the over-equipped top of the range Summit Reserve costs €97,000.

Salty and ambitious prices, because comparable to those of its German rivals (Audi Q7, BMW X5, etc.).
