Opel Astra Sports Tourer (2022) test: an (almost) rational station wagon!

The station wagon version is traditional for the Opel Astra, and is called Sports Tourer. But for this new generation of the German sedan, everything changes. Indeed, as you surely know, the new Astra adopts the underside of the Peugeot 308. We can therefore expect this Opel Astra Sports Tourer to take on the qualities and faults of the Peugeot 308 SW. We take stock in our video test :

A functional and well-thought-out interior, but not always flattering

This Sports Tourer version is closely derived from the Astra saloon but grows a little in length, with an advertised trunk for just over 600 L. Appreciable! In the front seats, you benefit from more classic ergonomics than at Peugeot, with two 10-inch screens set behind a glass strip, sleek and flattering. What is less flattering are those few materials on the center console, even in our model of the day in the Ultimate high finish. Between messy lacquered black and very easily scratched lids, one can imagine a certain difficulty in keeping this interior in good condition. But on the whole, the passengers in the front are rather well received.

Behind, despite the lengthening of the wheelbase by 7 cm, the place is always fair enough for a family break. A defect taken from the 308, but that we excuse less for this Astra which presents itself as an alternative perhaps less sexy but more rational.

A competent driver

On the road, this Opel Astra Sports Tourer is very competent, like its French sister. Compared to the 308 SW, it is a little firmer, but remains welcoming on a daily basis. Engine, rolling and air noises are well controlled. Let’s not really talk about dynamism, that’s not its goal, even if the Astra does not come apart when you jostle it a little.

Finally, our engine of the day, the 180 hp rechargeable hybrid, is well known in the Stellantis galaxy. We will wait to have it measured by Labo Auto Plus, but we can give you the values for an equivalent Peugeot 308 SW: 7,3 L/100 km batteries vides. Correct, especially since the 308 like the Astra do not really have direct competition in this segment: the Volkswagen Golf SW does not exist in a rechargeable hybrid.

Watch out for inflation…

There remains the question of prices, which is quite tricky here. The final prices have not yet been communicated, but our PHEV 180 hp version in Ultimate finish should start around €45,000. A sum, especially since this slate places the Opel at the level of the 308 SW. And if the latter is a little less well equipped as standard, it is better finished, has a little more character, and is no less practical. The question of the particular ergonomics at Peugeot and the price of some options will allow you to decide between them, according to your needs.
