Can artificial intelligence (permanently) prevent traffic jams?

Companies are working on ways to prevent traffic jams using artificial intelligence. Discover the advantages of this method.

Traffic jams are one of the greatest scourges for motorists. And for good reason, in 2019, Parisian drivers spent on average the equivalent of a week stopped in their car. A situation which is not necessarily better elsewhere in France, or even in Europe, even if the rate of congestion obviously varies very greatly from one city to another. In addition to wasting time for those stuck in them, traffic jams also have a negative impact on productivity companies but also on pollution. Because cars stopped with the engine running for long minutes is not really ideal for the environment. Not to mention the fuel burned for nothing, at a time when the price of it is still at its highest. If some solutions exist to reduce traffic jams, thanks in particular to guidance applications, some companies want to do even better.

The rise of artificial intelligence

Indeed, some companies are currently working on ways to reduce congestion on the road by using artificial intelligence. This technology offers many advantages, helping to reduce traffic jams. To make them disappear permanently? Maybe one day, when all the infrastructure will be adapted. Because these must also evolve, as proposed by the start-up No Traffic, which is working on an AI capable of communicating with traffic lights. These adapt to the traffic and change from green to red so as not to create traffic jams at intersections. According to the company, these would drop by 50 to 60% thanks to this innovative solution.

Lights, the solution against traffic jams?

Is the solution to eliminating traffic jams to be found in the traffic lights ? This is what many tech companies think, but also researchers. Many of them are working on solutions to make these infrastructures more intelligent, in order to make traffic more fluid. For now, these are still in the test phase, but there is no doubt that they will be adopted over the next few years by municipalities, in order to reduce or even eliminate traffic jams.
