Dacia Duster 1 (2010-2017): choosing the best used version

Tempted by a second-hand Dacia Duster first generation? You are right. But beware, some versions are to be avoided at all costs.

Launched in 2010, the Dacia Duster was immediately a success. Adventurer look but family vocation, proven underwear and above all very attractive prices, it quickly became the star of the brand. Logical, therefore, to find many of them on the second-hand market today. A tempting purchase, especially as its engines remain classified Crit’air 1 (gasoline) or 2 (diesel), and can therefore still drive in large cities for a few years. Very few compact SUVs at this price can claim the same treatment. But beware, some versions are absolutely to be avoided, and the rating is holding up very well. We therefore help you to choose the best version, for a second-hand Dacia Duster at the top!

Used Dacia Duster: which finish to turn to?

True to the spirit of the range, the entry-level Dacia Duster is very stripped down. Too even, since the Base finish does not include air conditioning, electric windows or height-adjustable steering wheel. It is also necessary to wait for the second level of finish, called Laureate, to see the air conditioning appear, as well as an on-board computer.

But even if it means choosing, instead aim for the highest finish, Prestige. It still has equipment that is still up to date, especially since the major restyling at the end of 2013. We then find, among other things, a central touch screen equipped with GPS, reversing radar, and a cruise control/speed limiter. Enough to ensure completely modern services, and to bet on a more stabilized resale price.

The engines of the Dacia Duster: good in diesel, disastrous in gasoline

As on many models of this period in the Renault group, the 1.2 TCe petrol engine is to be avoided absolutely. Despite its good performance and above all its correct consumption, this engine here in the 125 hp version is affected by very serious reliability problems. You risk engine failure, especially if the car exceeds 100,000 km. Avoid, therefore.

The other petrol unit has proven itself. It’s about 1.6 16V atmospheric 105 hp, already present on many Renault Clio, Mégane, etc. from the early 2000s. On the other hand, its performance is a little fair in this use, especially since it is coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the only one in the range. Suddenly, the average consumption soar: count about 9.4 L/100 km!

A mixed record for gasoline therefore. On the other hand, there are better side diesels. This is about the proven 1.5 DCi, as a 90 or 110 hp variant. The first consumes relatively little and remains reliable, but its approval is poor. the 110 hp therefore remains the version of choice, with similar consos but much better performance. Prefer a model after 2013, to benefit from some modifications improving its reliability.

Dacia Duster 1.5 DCi 110 Prestige: the perfect version?

As you will have understood, the Prestige finish is still very current today, while the DCi 110 diesel combines pleasure, reliability and low fuel consumption. Undoubtedly, the best of the Duster 1. To further improve the SUV, aim a restyled version (2014-2017), better equipped and more reliable. A copy under 110,000 km can be found under €9,000.
