Volvo EX90, what we already know about the Swedish SUV

Volvo has unveiled the first information on the new flagship of the Swedish brand, the EX90, which will soon replace the XC90.

This is the future flagship of the Swedish brand. The Volvo EX90 will be presented on November 9, and will replace the XC90, the brand’s current Premium SUV. While waiting for this official presentation, Volvo has unveiled some elements that will equip the next EX90.

Volvo EX90, the safest SUV ever

The Swedish brand is very ambitious for its future SUV and talks about the “safest model ever”. To support its words, the Swedish brand has unveiled an initial list of equipment that will be installed on the next model. The big novelty will be present in the front bumper of the car, which will be equipped with a brand new security system.

This is the lidar technology, developed by the company Luminar. This technology will make it possible to scan the road over several hundred meters, thanks to the presence of a pulsed laser. This laser works both day and night, and is very precise. The CEO of the Swedish manufacturer, Jim Rowan, explains that “The difference lidar can make to real-life safety is remarkable. Our recent research indicates that adding lidar to a car can reduce high-consequence crashes by up to 20%, and overall crash avoidance can be improved by up to 9%.”

The system will be present on the roofline and front grille of the SUV. A total of five radars and 16 ultrasonic sensors will ensure this monitoring system.

A single electric motorization available

The Volvo EX90 will be a 100% electric SUV. No thermal or hybrid-rechargeable version will therefore be available. The Swedish brand will thus mark a new stage in the electrification of its models. Volvo had already presented the C40 a few months ago, a 100% electric SUV which took up the codes of the XC40. The Volvo EX90 should thus bring a major technological advance in terms of electric motorization. According to the direction of the manufacturer, “The EX90 marks the beginning of a new era” at Volvo.

The Swedish brand is aiming for complete electrification of its models by 2030. And Volvo wants to appear as quickly as possible “a very credible next-generation electrified automaker”. Beginning of response on November 9th.
