Maserati GranTurismo: the electric or thermal GT finally presented!

After 15 years of good and loyal service, and above all a thundering V8, the Maserati GranTurismo is revolutionizing. In 100% electric mode or in V6, it’s up to you!

The first generation lasted 15 years! Maserati finally renews its large sports coupe, the GranTurismo. And if the style will not shock the fans of the model, what hides under the long hood should on the other hand scare the purists… We take a tour of this brand new model!

Maserati GranTurismo: under the similar look, everything changes!

Maserati is therefore continuing its sporting renaissance, after the buxom MC20 supercar. Logically, the new GranTurismo takes up some stylistic elements of the latter, with in particular the optics and the grille. But the proportions (4.96 m long and 1.96 m wide) and the general look remain very close to the old model. The GranTurismo remains a large coupe, dominated by a long bonnet. The body part covering the hood and fenders even measures more than 3 m2 in area!

But under these consensual and evolutionary rather than revolutionary trappings, everything changes. Starting with the platform, made of aluminum and magnesium, which will now equip the entire Maserati range. Unfortunately, if the objective was to save weight, it is obviously a bit missed: the GranTurismo is announced for 1 795 kg for the lightest of the versions… The fault in particular with the arrival of the all-wheel drive on all versions.

The V6 from the Maserati MC20…

But the Maserati GranTurismo has never been a star dancer, attacking the Bentley Continental GT more than the Porsche 911. On the other hand, it could count on a V8 with a fiery character, which was the main attraction of the model. Climatic and regulatory context requires, this engine is retiring. It is replaced by the V6 “Nettuno”, already seen on the MC20, and innovative with its pre-combustion chambers. It is here a little deflated compared to the 630 hp supercar, and will be offered in two versions. The Maserati GranTurismo Modena will therefore ship this V6 with 490 hp, while the GranTurismo Trofeo can count on 550 hp.

Little bit just ? These two models remain capable of more than 300 km/h peak (302 and 320 km/h), and less than 4 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h (3.9 and 3.5 seconds).

… Or the Folgore, the first 100% electric Maserati!

But that’s nothing compared to the star of the range: the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore. Indeed, the Folgore is neither more nor less than the very first 100% electric Maserati Of the history. The manufacturer wishing to be fully electric in the coming years, the platform was developed with these two energies in mind.

Thanks to three electric motorsthe GranTurismo Folgore can count on a combined power of 761 ch, distributed to all four wheels. The battery, with a useful capacity of 83 kWh, is based around an 800V architecture. As on the rivals Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron GT, this system allows lightning recharges: in 270 kW, Maserati announces 100 km of autonomy recovered in 5 minuteseven if no autonomy is yet communicated.

Logically, these batteries weigh heavy. The Maserati GranTurismo Folgore is advertised for 2,260 kg… But the colossal torque, which reaches 1,350 Nm, propels this mass from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. Intelligent power management (torque-vectoring) should also help the behavior.

Visually, the GranTurismo Folgore stands out from its thermal counterparts with less permeable front and rear bumpers, specific rims, and logos on the front fenders. And, of course, the sound that will not emerge from its non-existent exhausts…

An interior probably close to the Grecale

As for the interior, for the moment no images filter. On the other hand, we know that the Maserati GranTurismo will call on three screens, including two in the center. The same layout as for the Grecale SUV, with 12.2 inches for the handset, 12.3 inches for the central screen, and 8.8 inches for the one that controls the air conditioning. Occupants should travel in luxury, and can even accommodate two passengers in the back. Maserati announces that two adults will be able to take place in the back, even if the first photos of the exterior suggest a rather restricted space.

To be sure, we will have to wait for the first deliveries of the Maserati GranTurismo, expected for 2023.
