Cars of the week: the Renault 5 Turbo 3E concept

While waiting for the electric R 5 in 2024, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its iconic city car, Renault is giving us this concept inspired by the legendary R 5 Turbo and Turbo 2.

Renault 5 Turbo 3E: its name alone sums up the intention of the brand.

Make the link between, on the one hand, the glorious history (sports, in this case) of the R5 Turbo/Turbo 2 and Maxi Turbo from the years 1980 to 1985, and, on the other, the future. The “3” marks this concept as a continuation of the Turbo 2. The “E” symbolizes Renault’s resolutely electric future. So no turbocharged mechanics here, but an electric block on each of the rear wheels, for a total power of 280 kW, or 380 hp (against 160 hp for the Turbo / Turbo 2, and 350 hp for the Turbo Maxi). Aesthetically, the filiation is undeniable. It’s a mixture of “restomod” (1) and “retrofit” (2), with a few extravagances (mega-fin and hypertrophied rear wings, colored touches, etc.). The size of 4 m long and 2.02 m wide is superior to that of the original models (3.66 mx 1.75 m), but the height is identical (1.32 m). On board, this strict two-seater has many nods to the 1980s (speedometers, tartan, etc.).

All of a bombinette

The sporting spirit is well represented: tubular chassis, carbon fiber shell, flat bottom, roll bar, torque of 700 Nm (available immediately), 0 to 100 km/h in 3s5 and top speed of 200 km/h . All for an announced weight of 980 kg (970 kg for the 1980 R5 Turbo) …to which are added the 520 kg of the battery, that is to say 1,500 kg in total, all the same! This Renault 5 Turbo 3E will be one of the stars of the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show (October 17 to 23) and could, why not, give rise to a (small) series – less sassy – if it arouses a great enthusiasm…

Avenger, Jeep’s electric urban SUV

The American brand has unveiled the first images of its small, 100% electric city SUV. If no technical information has been revealed (except an autonomy announced at 400 km), it could inaugurate the STLA Small platform of the Stellantis group. Smaller than a Renegade, it sports a typical Jeep look (square shape, seven-slot grille). A 4×4 version is also planned. To find out more, you will have to wait for the Paris Motor Show (from October 17 to 23).

Opel resurrects the GSe label

At Opel, these three letters were synonymous with sports models (Grand Sport Einspritzung, or Grand Sport Injection). They now mean Grand Sport Electric. The Astra and Astra Sports Tourer will inaugurate this label, in a 225 bhp plug-in hybrid version fitted with a specific “GSe” chassis.

1. Consists of restoring an old vehicle by integrating modern technologies. 2. Consists of replacing a combustion engine with an electric one.
