Which electric car has the best range in town?

You want to switch to the electric car but you wonder which is the most fuel-efficient in town? Here are the electric cars with the best range in town.

The electric car is booming: thanks to tax incentives, it represented nearly 10% of vehicle registrations in France in 2021, compared to 6.7% in 2020 and 1.9% in 2019.

With fuel prices soaring, going electric is more tempting than ever. But it is advisable not to rush headlong, and to think about its use in order to find the most suitable model. the Lab Auto Plus has measured the autonomy of many models of electric vehicles on the market: here are the ones that have the better autonomy in the city.

Electric cars: our test protocol

The urban autonomies indicated were noted by a technician from Labo Auto Plus at our base in Montlhéry, according to our own protocol. They may differ from those announced by the manufacturers, measured according to the more “optimistic” WLTP protocol.

Of course, the data is variable according to the models as well as their configurations, which in particular make it possible to opt for several different battery capacities. The average autonomy corresponding to a city use is a good indicator. In reality, we will always keep a margin to avoid “dry running out” which, in the case of an electric car, is to reach a level of 0% before arriving at a charging station.

Electric cars: the models with the best autonomy in town

According to the measurements of Labo Auto Plus, the model with the best autonomy in town is the Ford Mustang Mach-E, in its Extended Range version equipped with the 99 kWh battery and the 294 horsepower engine: this one displays a urban autonomy of 488 km.

The models of the American manufacturer Tesla also show excellent results: the “Long Autonomy” models of the range come just after, with the Tesla Model S (540 hp, 484 km), the Tesla Model Y (440 hp, 458 km) or the Tesla Model 3 (440 hp, 446 km). The Hyundai Ioniq 5 with the 73 kWh battery and the 218 horsepower engine also has a very interesting urban autonomy of 437 km.
