Second-hand professionals are looking gloomy, with sales down 14% over the whole of 2022. A sad record.

The past year has not really been the happiest ever. Between the war in Ukraine, the rise in fuel prices and the threat of power cuts, French morale has been put to the test in recent months. And almost all sectors have been affected by the ambient gloom, no one having been spared. And especially not the automotive industry, which has been particularly targeted this year. In addition to the increase in the cost of tolls and maintenance, the price of cars for sale, both new and used, has also soared. While sales have fallen sharply.
The used car market is booming in the United States.
With the epidemic, many people want a cheap car to avoid public transport.
Even if it means reselling it when the situation returns to normal.

This is especially the case with second-hand models. Indeed, sales of second-hand models fell by 14.1% compared to last year, according to figures from the site Autoscout24. A very high figure, which is quite simply the worst since the year 2000. And for good reason, only 5,127,955 transactions were recorded over the whole of the twelve months of 2022, a figure that is still extremely low. For comparison, more than 5.9 million vehicles found takers last year, during an equally complicated period for the automotive industry.

Several reasons explain this situation. First of all, the reduced offer as well as the high tariffs, whereas these have climbed by 15.7% on average. Worse still for petrol models, whose prices have soared by an average of 20.7%. Overall, these are the oldest cars which had the least difficulty in attracting motorists, especially those over 16 years of age. No doubt due to their lower price and wider availability compared to newer models.
